Day One: The Home Report

Most people are back at work today so either before you go or when you get home you’ll be pleased to know today’s task involves no cleaning. Today’s task focusing more on planning than doing and will take around 30-40 minutes. Ahead of the weekend I want you to make a to do list. Nice and simple with no tidying at all to do today! This one comes with a twist. The to do list you are making is for your home.

Spend some time today, walking through your house, starting at the front door. When you hit areas you want to change, write it down in a list format. These should aim to achievable and realistic. Don’t get distracted by house work and leap into tidy mode or attacking the laundry pile while you do this. Today is just about planning. Try to stick to the task in hand and avoid the temptation to jump in and tidy. Note any areas that need to be tidied, or cleaned, or improved. Think of it like a house inspection.

Problems and Solutions

Next you will take those items and come up with solutions for each of these house ailments:

  • If the trouble area is the laundry pile. It could be that your solution may be to assign a day to do laundry, or donate clothes to charity so it doesn’t become such a large overwhelming pile.
  • If the trouble area is the hallway shoe rack is overrun with smelly sneakers, your solution could be that you find an alternative shoe storage solution or move the shoe rack.
  • If the problem area is the hallway wall has marks on it, the solution could be washing the walls or giving it a repaint.

By the time you are finished your list may be long! Don’t panic! This isn’t a race, it’s a journey. Next take a highlighter and select 5 things you think you can achieve this month. You could do this room by room. Or even two smaller tasks along with two larger tasks. However you want to break it up is up to you. Next month you can take a look at the remaining tasks and divide them up again. Do the same for the following months and so on until all of your tasks for the year are complete!
