The make your own blogs have proved really popular, first with the pompom garland and then with the Christmas Stollen, and now with Crochet place mats!
I have had this wool hanging around for a while now, it was a bit of an impulse purchase. Mostly I bought it to try it and bump up the online shopping basket in order to qualify for free postage! It’s a bit scratchy so knew it would be great for anything other than a hat. My plan was always to make place mats, I did flirt with the idea of a plant pot cover. I opted for crochet place mats, with no inspiration on how I wanted to make them. I didn’t want square ones, but plain round ones seemed a little boring. Then after seeing this rug online, inspiration kicked in! So, on to the place mats!
To make your Crochet Place Mats you need:
4mm Crochet Hook
Scissors
Dk wool, I used 1 ball of Lopi Léttlopi in Lagoon Heather Green per placemat
Darning Needle
8 Stitch Markers
For the circles
US Crochet terms
Make 8 small circles
Start: Ch2
Round 1: 10hdc in 2nd ch from hook, join with slst in top of first hdc. (10hdc)
Round 2: ch1, 2hdc in every st. Join with slst in top of first hdc. (20hdc)
Round 3: ch1, *1hdc in first st, 2hdc in the next* repeat between stars until last st. Join with slst in top of first hdc. (30hdc)
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
Make 1 large circle. Follow until round 3 then:
Round 4: ch1, *1hdc in the next 2 st, 2hdc in the next* repeat between stars until last st. Join with slst in top of first hdc. (40hdc)
Round 5: ch1, *1hdc in next 3 st, 2hdc in the next* repeat between stars until last st. Join with slst in top of first hdc. (50hdc)
If you aren’t sure how to crochet circles, this may help.
Construction
Once your circles are made you want to sew the small ones to the larger circle. You need to place all the small circles around the larger one. Where the long tails touch the larger circle mark with a stitch marker or contrasting yarn. This is where you will be stitching them to each other.
Work in an anti-clockwise direction, feeding the tail around the edge of the small circle to the left like the picture below, this is where you stitch the smaller circles to one another.
Once you’ve stitched a small circle feed the tail up to the top and trim.
Complete this for all the small circles. Once all your circles are sewn together, it should look like this:
Don’t worry if at this stage it isn’t sitting completely flat.
Next up we need to add the outer trim. Start with a standing single crochet into the top of one of the circles, ch12 and sc into the top of the next small circle. Continue this around and slst into the first sc with a slst.
Outer circle
Round 1: ch1, 1hdc in every chain and sc (104 hdc), slst into top of first hdc.
Round 2: ch1, 2hdc in first stitch, 1hdc in the next 12, *2hdc in the next stitch, 1hdc in the next 12,* repeat between * until the end. Slst into top of first hdc.
Round 3: ch1, 2hdc in first stitch, 1hdc in the next 13, *2hdc in the next stitch, 1hdc in the next 13,* repeat between * until the end. Slst into top of first hdc.
Round 4: ch1, 2hdc in first stitch, 1hdc in the next 14, *2hdc in the next stitch, 1hdc in the next 14,* repeat between * until the end. Slst into top of first hdc.
Round 5: ch1, 2hdc in first stitch, 1hdc in the next 15, *2hdc in the next stitch, 1hdc in the next 15,* repeat between * until the end. Slst into top of first hdc.
Finishing
You can add an optional border, I used crab stitch, 1 stitch in every stitch around. Fasten off Weave in any ends.
Now you need to press the mat. It will look a bit crinkled but once you have dampened it and ironed it flat it will make all the difference. Just take a look!
The ironing makes all the difference. The yarn was nice to use despite its rough texture. You can get one place mat from one ball, so cost works out at £2.99 per crochet place mat. It will felt over time, but i don’t mind that. So, your Crochet place mats, are now ready for your Christmas table.
Pin it for later!
